How to reset your Office 365 Password

We all forget a password from time to time. If you have forgotten your Office 365 password and cannot sign in, with Self Service Password reset enabled on your Office 365 account (if you don't have this, ask your IT Admin to set this up for you) you can reset your own password from the Office 365 Portal login screen.

When Self Service Password Reset was enabled, you would have been asked to set up additional security information on your account, usually a mobile number and an alternative email address. You can use these to verify who you are and reset your own password.

Go to https://login.microsoftonline.com/

Enter your email address and click Next, then choose Work or School Account. If you have Branded Portal set up, verify that the branding has changed on the sign in page (if it doesn’t change and you think it should, stop immediately, check your URL, and go back)

Click ‘Forgot my password’

Fill in the capture prompt to verify you are human (you are, aren’t you? ? ) and click Next

Choose the verification method you want to use – this will send a PIN to your chosen email address or phone number.

If you have set up the Microsoft Authenticator App, you may have that option too.

For additional security, you may be asked to complete both verifications (phone and email) and you may be asked to type the full phone number and email address to make sure it matches what’s on record.

Once Security is satisfied, you will be asked to choose a new password.

Next Steps

If you use your Office 365 account to sign into your PC or Laptop, it’s a good idea to now log out and back on again to update your session. This should also update your Office applications.

Keep an eye out for prompts to enter your new password into things like Outlook both on your PC and especially on your phone.
